What we do

"Just to keep you in the picture"

A few days ago St Mary’s Church received Planning Permission from Melton Borough Council for the following:

"Demolition of the redundant boiler house and the construction of a new building to act as the church Choir Vestry, practice space, and provide space for learning, study and meetings. An independent building is proposed on the site of the old boiler house."

Ever since the work started on the Church building re-ordering works, there was concern that we would be losing the choir vestry in the Church… hence the temporary structure in the South transept. If you have a peek inside, you’ll see how much space the choir need for the piano, their books, robes… and themselves, of course! The Church archive is now stored there as well. This was always going to be a temporary measure… and it is a bit of an eye-sore… but it does the job for now!

We have always said we would look at the possibility of building a choir, storage, meeting space in the area where the old boiler house is… and, frankly, the self-seeded yew tree (in which birds sit and… to put in tactfully… make the path a dangerous slip-hazard) needs removing and the whole area requires tidying up, including the addition of fresh shrubs.

We considered all possible sites, including the use of Mary’s Place, and a new-build was felt to be worth pursuing.

Support was sought and gained from the PCC to explore the viability of such a building… and seeking planning permission is part of that process. Nothing has been approved or agreed in terms of going ahead. Next steps will be for St Mary’s DCC to consider the way forward, and then the final decision lies with the PCC.

Please pray for those on the various committees who have important decisions to make.

Revd Kevin Ashby,

Team Rector.
